About Lee Black — Graphic Novelist & Writer
Graphic novelist. Writer. Witness.
Lee Black makes books about the things people don't talk about at dinner – addiction, mental illness, grief, the body, trauma. The work is personal. It's also political. Those two things are the same.
Lee Black's work sits where comics and storytelling become tools for processing life. Her work spans graphic novels, illustrated memoir, photography and creative non-fiction. These stories are are about survival and the compassion it takes to live in this world.
Drawing from lived experience with mental health and addiction, Lee's books don't offer easy resolutions. They offer company. The kind of company that says you're not the only one who's been here.
Lee grew up in the East Bay area of California. She has been an artist since she was a tiny girl. Comic books have always been a part of the picture. Lee planned on being a war photographer, but became a RN instead. She believes health care is a human right.
